| Refrigerator | $90, or $110 with refrigerant fee | Heavy; the City adds a $17 refrigerant surcharge per unit |
| Piano | From $239 | Very heavy, needs extra crew and care |

What makes junk removal cost more (or less)
1. Volume
Volume is the main price driver. A typical junk removal truck holds roughly 12 to 15 cubic yards, though sizes vary between companies. That is why prices are quoted as quarter, half or full loads. If you want a per-cubic-yard figure, a $450–$600 full load works out to roughly $30–$50 per cubic yard. Ask your hauler how big its truck is so you can compare quotes fairly.
2. Weight and heavy materials
Volume pricing assumes ordinary household junk. Dense materials such as concrete, brick, tile, soil, sod and shingles fill the truck’s weight limit long before they fill its space, and the landfill charges by the tonne. That is why many haulers have a separate heavy-material rate. For example, one Calgary list shows a heavy-material full truck bed at $449 against $499 for a regular full load, but with a much smaller volume. If your job includes heavy debris, mention it, and see our construction debris removal page.
3. Access: stairs, distance and disassembly
A sofa in a garage is a two-minute carry. The same sofa in a basement with a turning staircase can take two people twenty minutes. Some haulers build access into the quote, others add a labour fee (one Calgary list shows $50 additional labour). The reverse is also true: one Calgary company offers 10% off for curbside or alley pickup. Disassembly of beds, desks or sectionals can add time too.
4. Item surcharges and landfill fees
Haulers pay the same City fees you would. In 2026 the City of Calgary charges $113 per tonne for household garbage (or $25 per load under 250 kg), a $17 refrigerant removal surcharge per fridge, freezer or air conditioner plus weight, and a $275 hard-to-handle surcharge on bulky, low-weight loads. Mattress, refrigerant and tire fees are often itemised on hauler price lists for this reason.
5. Timing
Same-day and after-hours jobs depend on availability, and some companies charge more for them. If your timing is flexible, say so; it can help the hauler fit you in at the standard rate.
6. Sorting, donation and recycling
Sorting a load so usable furniture goes to charity and metal and electronics are recycled takes extra effort, but it also avoids landfill fees. Whether that makes a job cheaper or more expensive depends on the company. Ask how they handle it.
DIY vs hiring: a real Calgary comparison
Here is how the numbers can compare for a typical job: an old sofa, a broken dresser and about 10 bags of garage junk.
Do it yourself
- Landfill fee: probably the $25 flat rate if the load is under 250 kg, or $113 per tonne above that
- A truck or trailer (borrowed, rented or your own)
- One or two helpers for the sofa
- Round trip to East Calgary, Shepard or Spyhill, plus the scale line
- Possible $275 hard-to-handle surcharge if the load is bulky and light
Hire a hauler
- Probably a quarter load: about $149–$199 on published Calgary price lists
- Crew carries everything out, including from the basement
- Disposal and recycling handled
- Usually done in under an hour
- Confirm GST and surcharges in the quote
If you already have a truck and helpers, DIY usually wins on cost. If you would need to rent a vehicle, take time off or ask friends to carry a sofa up the stairs, hiring often comes out close to even and saves you the work.
Cheap junk removal in Calgary: how to pay less without cutting corners
Looking for the cheapest junk removal Calgary has to offer? “Cheap junk removal” should mean paying only for what you need, not hiring someone who dumps your items illegally. Illegal dumping is an ongoing problem in Calgary, and a suspiciously low cash price can be a warning sign. Ways to lower the bill honestly:
- Remove free items first. Electronics, tires, clothing and household hazardous waste are free at City drop-offs for residents.
- Donate good furniture. Some charities collect usable furniture for free. See free furniture removal in Calgary.
- Use a Community Cleanup. Free City events (roughly April to September) accept furniture, mattresses and toilets.
- Combine jobs. One half load costs less than two quarter loads booked separately.
- Bring items to the garage, driveway or alley if you can do it safely.
- Get the price in writing, including GST, disposal and surcharges, so there are no surprises.
Quote checklist: what to ask before you book
- Is the price fixed, or an estimate that can change on site? What would change it?
- Does it include labour, loading, transport and all disposal fees?
- Are there surcharges for fridges, mattresses, tires, stairs or heavy materials?
- Is GST included?
- Do you hold a City of Calgary business licence and liability insurance?
- Where will my items go: donation, recycling or landfill?
- What time window will you arrive in, and how will you contact me?
- How do I pay, and when?

Calgary junk removal prices compared with landfill fees
Why does hauling one sofa cost $75 or more when the landfill might charge $25? The hauler’s price covers two people, a truck, fuel, insurance, the drive to and from your home and the landfill, scale time and the disposal fee itself. Minimum charges exist because even the smallest job takes most of an hour of crew time. That is also why prices per item fall sharply as the load gets bigger.
How we researched these prices
In October 2026 we reviewed the publicly posted price pages of Calgary-based junk removal companies and recorded their published rates. We took City of Calgary disposal fees from the City’s official 2026 residential landfill rates page. We report ranges rather than one number because prices differ between companies, and we name our sources so you can check them. We do not receive payment from any company mentioned here for being listed. Prices change, so treat this page as a guide and rely on the written quote you receive.

Frequently asked questions
How much does junk removal cost?
In Calgary, published prices we reviewed in October 2026 run from about $75–$110 for a minimum job to roughly $450–$600+ for a full truckload. Most household jobs land between a quarter and a half load, about $150–$300.
How much is junk removal for a single item?
Single items usually cost the hauler’s minimum or a fixed item price. Calgary examples: mattress about $75–$95, fridge about $90–$110 including the refrigerant fee, piano from about $239 and hot tub from about $309.
How much does junk removal cost per cubic yard?
Calgary haulers usually price by fraction of a truck rather than per cubic yard. As a rough guide, many junk trucks hold about 12–15 cubic yards, so a $450–$600 full load works out to roughly $30–$50 per cubic yard. Ask your hauler for its truck size.
What is the cheapest way to get rid of junk in Calgary?
Donate or sell usable items, take electronics and tires to a City Eco Centre for free, use a spring or summer Community Cleanup event, or haul a small load to the landfill yourself ($25 under 250 kg). Paid removal is cheapest when you book one combined load instead of several small pickups.
Why do junk removal prices vary so much?
Volume, weight, access (stairs, long carries), item surcharges (fridges, mattresses, tires), disposal costs and labour time all change the price. Heavy materials like concrete or shingles are often priced separately from household junk.
Is GST included in junk removal prices?
Not always. Several Calgary hauler price lists we reviewed show prices plus tax. Ask whether the quote includes GST.
Do junk removal companies charge extra for stairs?
Some do, especially for heavy items or long carries. One Calgary price list we reviewed shows a $50 additional labour fee, and another offers 10% off for curbside or alley pickup, which shows how much access affects the price.
