Free furniture pickup by city: the 2026 table
We checked the official waste pages of 23 Canadian cities and regions in October 2026 and recorded whether residents can put furniture and mattresses out for free curbside pickup, the limits, and what drop-off costs. Use it to see your free options before paying anyone. Each city links to a full local guide with sources.

Key findings
- 4 of 23 locations have no curbside furniture pickup we could find: Calgary, Victoria, Saskatoon and Maple Ridge. Residents there must drive bulky items to a landfill or hire a hauler.
- Most Greater Toronto Area municipalities collect furniture for free, but with limits: 2 items per collection in Ajax, 3 in Markham, Oakville and Vaughan, and 4 per booking in Hamilton and London.
- Metro Vancouver cities cap free pickups per year: 4 in Coquitlam, up to 6 in Surrey (8 with a registered suite).
- Some cities charge: Winnipeg charges for every bulky pickup; Oshawa gives one free collection a year and charges $35 after that.
- Weight limits are common: 68 kg per item in Vaughan, 90 kg in Hamilton and the Region of Waterloo, which rules out many freezers, pianos and sofa beds.
What this means if you have junk to get rid of
If your city collects furniture for free, use it for the items it accepts: it is the cheapest option. A junk removal company makes sense when items exceed the limits, are too heavy, need carrying out of the home, include renovation debris or appliances with refrigerant, or need to go today. In cities with no curbside pickup, such as Calgary, a hauler or a landfill trip are the only routes. See typical Calgary junk removal prices or browse all location guides.
How we collected this data
In October 2026 we reviewed each municipality’s official waste collection and drop-off pages, plus official news releases for recent changes (for example, Mississauga’s planned takeover of collection from Peel Region). Where we could not find an official curbside furniture program, we say “no program found” rather than guess. We will update this table as programs change. Spotted something out of date? Let us know.
